An Honest Review of the Dyson Airwrap Hair Styler | Is It Worth The $550 Price Tag?

October 22, 2018

When I first saw the Dyson Airwrap, honestly didn’t know what to think! It seems like something too good to be true! A hair styling tool that is capable of automatically wrapping hair around its barrel through a phenomenon called the Coanda Effect. However, the more videos I watched and the more I learned about this revolutionary new tool, I couldn’t resist and needed to get my hands on this styler ASAP! So I called every store that might possibly carry the Dyson Airwrap and finally hunted one down at my local Neiman Marcus. And so, it begins.

What Is The Dyson Airwrap Styler & What Makes It So Special?

The Dyson Airwrap Styler is a new hair styling tool that has been in the making for over 6 years by the ingenious team at Dyson! It is powered by a V9 motor that spins at up to 110,000 RPM which creates a high pressure, high-velocity airflow to curl and style hair as it dries without the use of extreme heat! Dyson has replicated the Coanda Effect in their curling barrels in which it has the ability to pick up hair and effortlessly wrap it around the barrel by itself for an almost self-curling experience. The Coanda Effect happens when a fluid jet attaches to a flat or curved surface. Similar to how a drips down the side of a glass when you are trying to pour it.

How Does It Work?

According to the Dyson website, there are 2 ways to style or curl hair, the first is with heat and the second is with moisture. Either one of these methods works to change the bonds within the hair structure which then enables the change in the shape of the hair strand.

Traditional heating tools use metal plates to heat hair to extremely high temperatures to manipulate hair a certain way such as to straighten or curl. However, introducing such extreme heat to hair damages it and once hair is damaged, it cannot heal itself. Damaged hair is also more brittle which makes it prone to breakage and split ends. In addition, damaged hair absorbs moisture much more than healthy hair. This additional moisture means that the damaged hair is vulnerable to losing its shape and structure as it sucks in more moisture from the hair throughout the day, decreasing the longevity of a hairstyle.

When hair is wet, water breaks down the hydrogen bond in the hair so when it dries in a certain shape, it keeps that shape. The Dyson Airwrap relies on water to style and shape a hairstyle by starting with damp hair and using its high-velocity airflow to dry and mold hair simultaneously. By using air to style hair, the Airwrap can also increase volume without the use of extreme heat.

The Coanda Effect

The Airwrap has a digital V9 motor that is powered by 1200W with an airflow of 13 l/s. All this power produces enough air flow to create the Coanda Effect. The Coanda Effect in this revolutionary hair styling tool uses high powered air pressure to attract hair to the surface of the attachment and molds it into the desired shape as it dries. By using air to style as oppose to traditional heating tools, the Airwrap offers more volume without the use of extreme heat.

No Extreme Heat

The Intelligent Heat Control in the Dyson Airwrap measures airflow temperature more than 40 times per second. This data is then transmitted to the microprocessor which controls the heating element and makes sure the airflow temperature doesn’t exceed 302°F (150°C). Most traditional heating tools heat hair at a range of 350°-450°F. At these extreme temperatures, hair is much more susceptible to damage.

Negative Ions

Much like most of the professional hairdryers on the market, the Dyson Airwrap uses Negative Ions to smooth hair and help reduce static electricity as it styles.

There is a magnetic clasp to secure the lid to the base of the storage container. The interior is lined with a beautiful black velvet fabric with individual compartments for all of the attachments. 1.2 Inch Curling Barrels

The two types of barrels enable you to choose the direction you want the curl to go. The 1.2 inch barrels will give you a tighter curl which will soften as you wear your style.

1.6 Inch Curling Barrels

Dyson Airwrap 1.6 inch curling barrels clockwise and counterclockwiseThe 1.6 Inch Barrel Attachment also comes with a clockwise and counter-clockwise barrel that gives you control of the direction you want your curl to go. Since these barrels are slightly larger than the 1.2 Inch barrels, this attachment will give you larger, softer curls as oppose to the smaller curling barrels.

Soft Smoothing Brush

Firm Smoothing Brush

Pre-Styling Dryer

While it is a dryer, the pre-styling dryer is significantly less powerful than the Dyson Hairdryer and has limited capabilities than a regular hair dryer since it does not come with any nozzle attachments.

Round Volumzing Brush

Dyson Airwrap Volumizing Round Brush attachement bristlesThe Round Volumizing Brush acts similarly to a regular round brush for a traditional blow out style. However, it has the ability to direct air into hair from the brush as opposed to an outside source such a hairdryer. This frees up the hairdryer hand and makes styling easier for at home use. Much like other round brushes, the bristles grab onto hair and creates tension to smooth and shape hair as it dries while at the same time adding volume.

My Thoughts

While there are numerous hair styling tools on the market, the Dyson Airwrap truly is one of a kind with their state-of-the-art Coanda Effect technology! The many attachments make this tool an extremely versatile hair styler with the ability to create a range of different looks from straight to curly and everything in between. However, all this technology, versatility, and the Dyson name also comes with an astronomical price tag for a hair styling tool, with models starting at $500.

So is the Dyson Airwrap really worth that high of a price tag? While I can’t speak for everyone, my initial thoughts and first impression of this hair styler is that it is pretty great! I am amazed with how well all of the attachments work and how luxurious this hair tool feels to use.

Since the Dyson Airwrap is really unlike anything already on the market, there is quite a bit of a learning curve as you get used to how the tool works and styles. I also had a bit of an issue with the length of the Styler handle as it is a lot longer than most of the hair tools I have used in the past. This made getting to some pieces of hair more difficult but I imagine this will get easier the more comfortable I get with the Dyson Airwrap.

Conclusion

Overall, after spending nearly $600 on the Dyson Airwrap Complete ($549.99+ tax which came to just under $595) and seeing everything that comes with this kit and testing out all the attachments for the first time. I honestly don’t have any buyer’s remorse about purchasing such an expensive hair styling tool. I’m not going to lie, I have been feeling like a kid with a new toy since getting the Airwrap and have had so much time playing around with it. Upon my initial impression and review, I do recommend it to anyone who is looking for a versatile hair styling tool that is less damaging for the hair.

I do plan on posting follow-up articles and videos as I use and learn more about this device and will keep you updated!

Thank you so much for stopping by!
